Japan disaster relief links




March 11th marked the second anniversary of the unthinkable disaster that struck northeastern Japan.  Please take a moment this week to remember the thousands of women, children, families, neighbors effected by the tsunami and nuclear disaster that followed.  Follow link above for more news about the current state of recovery and to see how you can help.

A great gift of a spring like day today, brought out families and many others.

Today inspires spring poetry. I am not even embarrassed.

Today in Buffalo presages Spring.

Sun is bright
birds it's harbingers
twittering and hopping on the mud puddles
where snow melt left slow grubs and worms
for the sparrow's early March feast.
Tiny shoots of yellow-green
were not apparent yesterday.
Today they grow so fast 

I could sit and see their progress,
push the black soil aside.
Here comes Spring.

What do Gardeners do in Winter in Buffalo?

Alex spent hours saving our Friends of the Japanese Garden of Buffalo Blog from obscurity yesterday. It was a good day because we also had a great article about the Garden in Buffalo-Niagara Gardens (see yesterday's post).  We had a good time working and dreaming about upcoming spring.  YES it will come!  Our first scheduled Japanese Garden event will be official Clean-Up Day, April 20th, 2013 (Saturday) .

Cherry Blossom Viewing is Coming

Spring may not seem close in Buffalo yet but indeed it is rumbling.  May 11th, 2013 will be our official celebration of the annual cherry blossom season.  Plan on joining the Friends of the Japanese Garden for a picnic while the cherry blossom petals float on our shoulders.

Japan Culture Day 2012

Iris Planting Event

On Thursday, September 20^th at 10am to 12 Noon, the Olmsted Conservancy and the Friends of the Japanese Garden of Buffalo will plant several hundred Japanese Iris and some other trees and plants which will flower in spring times for many years in the future.  Please join us for a couple of pleasant hours in the Japanese Garden of Buffalo.  Meet us in the Garden at 10 am.  Bring gloves and tools for planting if you have them (or we will provide you with them.)
